Proceeds of lectures help fund prizes for non-fiction historical writing on British India.
Two prizes will be awarded in 2023 for books published in 2022: The British in India Book Prize and The British in India Military History Book Prize.
The British in India Book Prize
An annual prize of £1000 for an original work that makes a significant contribution to advancing knowledge or understanding of the history of the British in South Asia and is the author’s first or second sole book publication.
The British in India Book Prize 2023
The British in India Book Prize 2023 rewards excellence in writing about the history of the British in South Asia by first- or second-time authors of books published in 2022. The winner will receive £1000. The winning entry will be decided by a panel of three judges.
Time frame
Submissions for the 2023 Prize open on 1 September 2022. Entries close on 31 December 2022. The winner is announced in May 2023.
Organisation
The British in India Historical Trust invites publishers, including university presses, commercial publishers and non-UK publishers, to submit a list of books they would like the Trust to call in for consideration. The Trust may also call in any other eligible book. A shortlist will be selected from which the winner will be chosen.

The British in India Military History Book Prize
An annual prize of £500 for an original work that makes a significant contribution to advancing knowledge or understanding of any aspect of the military history of the British in South Asia up to 1947 and is the author’s first or second sole book publication.

The British in India Prize for Military History 2023 rewards excellence in writing about the military history of the British in South Asia up to 1947 by first- or second-time authors of books published in 2022. The winner will receive £500. The winning entry will be decided by a panel of three judges.
